Halloween Safety Measures

Halloween is the time for fun and frolic as everyone is in a
festive mood. Kids and adults enjoy the crisp air, the fun
costumes, and of course, the candies. All this goes to make
the traditional All Hallow's Eve a night to remember!
Unfortunately, many a Halloween have turned into a
nightmare. Year after year, many children end up victims of
accidents, some even quite serious, instead of merrily
eating candy in the safety of their own homes. You need to
educate yourself and your children about the appropriate
safety rules so that your Halloween is a safe Halloween.

Halloween falls at the end of October when the weather turns
cold in many parts of the country. So, make sure your child
is properly protected from the chill. Keep the weather in
mind when you plan your child's costume. Encourage children
to wear layers, long pants, long sleeves, and walking shoes
or athletic shoes. Also, if the weather proves to be too
bad, you should think of an alternate plan instead of the
traditional 'trick or treat' around the neighborhood. You
may consider attending a community or neighborhood party.
You and your children will enjoy Halloween without being wet
or cold while traipsing around the neighborhood.

The reason why so many accidents happen on Halloween is
because the kids are out after dark. Moreover, they are in
dark costumes. Very often they may be virtually invisible to
a car's driver. So, would not it be a better idea to leave
around dusk rather than late night. Also, you and your child
should carry a flashlight so that you do not step on
something dangerous in the dark.

Many costumes now come with reflective strips sewn into
them. Alternatively, you can apply those reflective strips
to your child's costume yourself. Do not forget to apply the
back of the costume with appropriate reflective properties.
You can use flickering jewelry and pins because they serve
as decoration in addition to being a safety feature. If your
child wears a mask, make sure they can see properly through
the eyeholes. Also, ensure that the holes around the nose or
mouth are in place so that your child can breathe normally.

Finally, all candy needs to be inspected before a child
consumes anything. If candy is open or unwrapped,
immediately dispose of the treats. After all items
have been checked and everything is verified to be
wrapped, you can enjoy a safe Halloween! This holiday is
a favorite of children of all ages, but can quickly turn
into a nightmare if the proper safety precautions are not
taken.
